# Smart lists

> A saved filter, resolved live. Membership is always whatever matches.

A **smart list** is a saved filter over one object. Its membership isn't stored. It's whatever records match the filter *right now*, recomputed on every open. Add a matching record anywhere in Custral and it appears in the list automatically; change a record so it no longer matches and it drops out.

**No filter = every record** of the object. That's the intended way to make a plain "all my Contacts" list.

## When to pick a smart list

* A living segment ("Leads with no contact in 90 days", "accounts with health \< 40").
* A dashboard list that must always be current.
* Any "everything that matches X" set you'd otherwise re-curate by hand.

## Setting the filter

Open the list and click **Edit filter** to open the filter builder: the same pills, operators, and fields you use on a view. Apply, and the list re-resolves. Leave it empty to include every record.

## What's different from a static list

* **No manual add / remove**: membership is the filter, not a hand-picked set. To change who's in it, change the filter.
* **No stored membership**: nothing to back up or drift; it's a query.
