Smart Compose suggests how to finish your sentence as you type a reply or a new email. The suggestion appears as grey ghost text after your cursor, press Tab to accept it, or just keep typing to ignore it. It is on by default. Nothing extra to enable.

How it works

As you write, Custral asks an AI model for a short continuation and shows it inline. The suggestion is context-aware: it knows
  • who you’re writing to: so “Hey Dan” continues naturally with the recipient’s name,
  • the subject of the email, and
  • the most recent message in the thread you’re replying to,
so the completion fits the actual conversation rather than being generic. Suggestions are short by design (a clause or a sentence), update as you keep typing, and never appear in the middle of an existing word you’d be overwriting.

Using it

  1. Start writing a reply (or a new email) as normal.
  2. Pause for a moment. A grey suggestion appears after your cursor.
  3. Press Tab to accept it. The text is inserted and a fresh suggestion may follow.
  4. Keep typing to dismiss the suggestion and write your own words.
The suggestion is never sent or saved on its own. Only text you accept (or type) becomes part of your email.

Turning it off

Go to Settings → Client Settings → Email composer and toggle Smart compose off. The setting follows your account, so it applies wherever you use Custral. Turn it back on from the same place at any time.

Troubleshooting

  • Smart compose may be turned off, check Settings → Client Settings → Email composer. - Suggestions only appear once you’ve typed a couple of characters and then paused. They won’t show while you’re actively typing. - The cursor must be at the end of your text with nothing selected. - If your workspace AI usage is temporarily exhausted (for example in a sandbox), suggestions are skipped silently. Try again later.
Tab only accepts when a grey suggestion is actually visible. If you’re inside a snippet with fill-in variables, Tab moves between those variables first, finish or dismiss the snippet, then Tab will accept the suggestion.
Accepted suggestions add a leading space when your text ends mid-word, so words don’t fuse together. If you still see an odd join, just edit it as normal text. The suggestion becomes regular editable content once accepted.
Smart compose is a writing aid, not a source of facts. Always read a suggestion before accepting it and edit anything that’s wrong: never accept a date, price, name, or commitment you haven’t verified.
